The mission of the Department of Physics is to provide our students a quality education in the broad subject areas of physics.  The physics faculty is committed to educating students to become qualified graduates, ready for graduate studies or to enter the work force as productive adults. Students are encouraged to develop as whole persons, with strong moral and ethical convictions, a strong desire to provide community service, and a strong desire for life-long scholarship.  The department contributes to the fulfillment of the mission of the University in furtherance of the educational philosophy of the Society of Mary, whose founder, William Joseph Chaminade, began his educational career (1776-1791) teaching physics in southern France at the College of Mussidan.

A set of five comprehensive titles* embraces the broad areas of important goals we strive to achieve in our students: Kyle working on his Atomic homework.

Physics among the sciences and in society.
Principals and foundations of physics.
Methods and techniques in experimental physics.
Problem solving in physics.
Technical communication skills.

*Modeled after Taylor and Erwin, American Journal of Physics 57(6), June 1989.
